Registering with a Family Doctor

What it is

A family doctor (šeimos gydytojas) is a general practitioner (GP). Your family doctor is usually your first point of contact for everyday health problems, preventive care and referrals to specialists. To use publicly funded healthcare in Lithuania, you register with one clinic and are assigned a family doctor there.

How to register

1. Choose a clinic. You can register with a public polyclinic (poliklinika) or a private family medicine clinic.
2. Check your health insurance. If you are covered by compulsory health insurance (PSD), choose a clinic that has a contract with the National Health Insurance Fund (VLK).
3. Apply to register. Contact the clinic in person, by phone or through its website — each clinic has its own procedure.
4. Provide your details. You may be asked for your passport or ID, your personal identification number (asmens kodas) if you have one, your contact details and proof of insurance.
5. Confirm your registration. Ask which family doctor you have been assigned and how to book appointments.

Requirements can differ depending on your residence status and insurance coverage. If you are unsure, contact the clinic before you visit.

Where to register in Vilnius

All of these clinics have a contract with the National Health Insurance Fund (VLK) for family doctor services (VLK data, September 2026). They are listed by the number of registered patients. Call the clinic first to check that it is taking new patients.

The steps are the same everywhere in Lithuania: choose a public polyclinic or a private family medicine clinic near you and, if you have PSD, ask whether it has a contract with the National Health Insurance Fund (VLK). After registration

Once you are registered, your family doctor can:

• Treat common illnesses and chronic conditions
• Issue prescriptions (receptai)
• Refer you to specialists or hospital care
• Issue sick-leave certificates
