Is Healthcare Free in Lithuania?

Updated · Oct 12, 2026

The short answer

It depends on your insurance. Having a residence permit or living in Lithuania does not automatically mean that you are covered by compulsory health insurance (PSD) — check your own insurance status.

If you have PSD

  • Family doctor services are generally covered when you use a clinic that has a contract with the National Health Insurance Fund (VLK).
  • Specialist consultations and some other services may need a referral to be covered.
  • Some costs remain. Certain services, medicines and dental treatment may involve additional payments.

If you do not have PSD

  • You may need to pay for consultations, tests and treatment.
  • Ask the clinic for its prices before you book.
  • Check whether your private or international insurance covers the service.

In a life-threatening emergency you will be treated whether or not you are insured — see Emergency Medical Care.

How to check your insurance

For who is covered and how to check your status, see Health Insurance in Lithuania (SODRA / PSD).
