What it is

Losing your passport or residence permit can feel frightening. This guide explains the steps you should take to protect yourself legally and replace your documents as quickly as possible.

Who it is for

This guide is for any migrant living in Lithuania who has lost a passport, residence permit, or other important identity document — whether through theft, accident, or any other reason.

How to apply / what to do

Step 1 — Report to the police

Report the loss or theft to the Lithuanian police as soon as possible. You can go to any police station or call the non-emergency line. The police will give you a loss report certificate. Keep this — you will need it when you apply for replacement documents.

If you were robbed or threatened, call the emergency line 112.

Step 2 — Replace your passport (if applicable)

Your passport belongs to your home country. To get a replacement:

• Contact your country's embassy or consulate in Lithuania (or the nearest one if there is no embassy here).
• They will guide you through their own replacement procedure.
• Bring your police report and any other ID you have (photos, copies of the original document).

A list of embassies in Lithuania can usually be found on the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

Step 3 — Replace your Lithuanian residence permit

If your residence permit card (leidimas gyventi) was lost or stolen:

• Apply for a replacement at the Migration Department as soon as possible.
• You can submit the application through the MIGRIS portal or in person at a Migration Department office.
• Bring your police report, a valid passport (or travel document), and any other required documents listed on the Migration Department's website.
• There is a state fee for replacement; the current amount is published on their website.

While your replacement is being processed, you are not committing an offence simply because your card was lost — but carry your police report with you at all times.

What to do next

• Make copies now. Once you have new documents, photocopy or scan them and store copies securely (for example, in email or cloud storage). This makes replacement much easier if it ever happens again.
• If you are in a difficult financial situation and cannot afford the replacement fee, ask a legal aid or support organisation for advice.
